Interesting Head

Speaking of snowmen, sitting on a bench in Tompkins Square Park, in the circular area where the bandshell used to be, was this armless and broken-legged specimen:

Armless specimen.

He had a very interesting head:

Interesting head.

A fun day was had by all snowmen!

Zombieland Empty

The section of Tompkins Square Park near the Avenue A and East 7th Street entrance, that locals refer to as "zombieland", usually inhabited by drug addicts and alcoholics, was remarkably empty yesterday after Winter Storm Toby.

Zombieland empty.

It was not empty of snowmen, however!

But first…

I was walking down East 7th Street when I saw this snowman head, without a body!

Head without a body.

It didn't take long to solve the mystery. When I walked into Tompkins Square Park I saw this snowman body without a head in, of all places, zombieland:

Body without a head.

Just kidding — the head was on the ground:

Head on the ground.

Probably some anarchist did it!

On another table was this legless snowman:

Legless snowman.

What a sad collection of snowmen!

Mound Of Snow

Yesterday morning, before the start of Winter Storm Toby, the great blizzard that wasn't, I was walking across East 5th Street, when I saw this small mound of snow, left over from Winter Storm Skylar, the last great blizzard that wasn't:

Mound of snow.

It's strange how some snow lasts and other doesn't…

Eric Clapton

I was walking up Avenue A when I saw these Eric Clapton posters:

Eric Clapton Chase.

Did you ever notice how every picture of Eric Clapton holding a guitar looks the same?

On the other hand, only in the East Village would you see him beside an anarchist A!

A Real Find

The strange thing about this abandoned television set on East 6th Street is not that it was abandoned, but that someone still used it before abandoning it.

Ancient television set.

No doubt, some very old freegan will consider this a real find.

Abandoned Bicycle Frames

I was walking down Avenue C this past week, when I saw these two bicycle frames abandoned beside a trash can:

Abandoned bicycle frames.

The funny thing is that if the person who abandoned these knew that the beloved store across the street, with the yellow awning and no name, was a bicycle store, he could have taken them over and got some money for them.

No… Anything

Remember the beloved Bakeri, on East 6th Street, with the outdoor table for one on top of cellar doors?

Here is a reminder:

A reminder.

I passed by their last night and the place was empty.

Maybe this is why:

No wifi.

No wifi? There might as well be no electricity!

The Last Three

As part of my series of Day Trips Outside the East Village, I ventured this morning to Astor Place, to see the new rhino sculpture called "The Last Three", by the artist duo Gillie and Marc.

Here is a picture:

The Last Three.

East Villagers have been flocking to this sculpture since it was unveiled yesterday — there hasn't been this much excitement since Basquiat was alive!

Here is a map showing how to get there from the East Village:

Directions from East Village.

Thankfully, it's not very far, and you get to exit from St. Mark's Place, the coolest street in the East Village!

Made It Out Of Bed

I was walking past the beloved Loverboy on Avenue C this past Sunday…

…when I saw this sign:

Warning Sign Unheeded

The Lower East Side People's Mutual Housing Association, Inc. building on Avenue C has a warning sign so small no one can see it!

Warning sign.

I don't think this is true. The part about the tree railings, trees, and sidewalks being private property, that is.

It doesn't look like I'm the only one who disbelieves them!

In fact, so many people park their bicycles here, space is at a premium:

I see it but I pay it no mind…

Hassan Memorial

I was walking down Avenue C this past Sunday, when I saw this makeshift memorial in front of the beloved Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space:

Makeshift memorial.

I didn't know who it was for, but when I saw this sign on the door leading into the beloved C-Squat, I knew I would soon find out.

It was for Hassan, aka Jerrold Heiserman:

Don't shoot!

A close-up shows the inside of one of the squat rooms:

Inside a squat room.

It's not at all what I would expect a squat room to look like! Where are the bottle caps? Where are the nodded-out punks? And check out that office-style drop ceiling.

It's like the television commercial; It's not your father's squat room!

God Friended Me

Another exciting film shoot is going on!

The working title of the program is "God Friended Me".

No Parking.

The following streets are unavailable for parking during this time:

No parking.

It looks like they're filming in some of the most desolate parts of the East Village!

Desolate East 9th Street.

With the success of NBC's "The Good Place", it looks like CBS* is looking to cash in on religious-themed programming. What better neighborhood than the East Village to film in!

*I know this from a picture I didn't post.

Ruminating Refrigerator

Is your refrigerator ruminating?

You better go catch it!

Ruminating on Avenue A.

There's an old East Village expression: You can't take it with you.

That's because it doesn't belong to you — it's the landlord's!

#eastvillage #avenuea #refrigerators #rumination

The Bicycle Family Is No More

Speaking of bicycle parking, the bicycle family that once lived on East 4th Street is gone, now just a distant memory.

A distant memory.

#eastvillage #bicycles #4thstreet

No Bike Parking

If you were thinking of parking your bicycle here, on East 7th Street, you better think again:

Think again.

I'm not sure what, if anything, would happen if you did park here — East Villagers' barks are oftentimes worse than their bites.

Someone should park their bicycle here and let me know!

Long, long ago, when East Village Today was in its infancy, I posted a picture of a hidden sinkhole on the corner of Avenue C and East 6th Street.

This morning, I took a look through the Avenue-C-side holes in the construction fence that surrounds the place, and saw this:

Right hole.

Left hole.

It looks like some kind of hoarder lives here!

St. Mark's Place Closed

If you were thinking of driving eastward on St. Mark's Place today, you might want to rethink your plans.

Street Closed sign.

It should say: Place Closed!

Here is a picture of the street repair workers working to repair the street:

I'm not sure what was wrong, but I'm glad they're fixing it!

Abandoned Shoes

East Villagers are a thoughtful lot. If one of them has something, a pair of shoes, for instance, that don't fit, or he doesn't like the color, or the style, or the brand, whatever, he'll put them out for someone else to take.

On First Avenue.

In that case, finding these shoes will be even more propitious for the finder, because they're outside the beloved Foot Gear Plus, on First Avenue.

Foot Gear Plus.

Of course, the owners of Foot Gear Plus are not to happy about this!

Two Vases

Who would have thought it possible that the two faceless creatures that grace St. Mark's Place could ever be improved upon (except by reconstructing their faces)?

They have.

Two vases.

Two vases now sit in front of the two creatures — and they don't even match!

You would not expect a post from East Village Today to generate controversy, yet controversy has indeed been generated!

It started when I tweeted the link to my article Moped Tires — Update.

Look what I saw this morning, on Avenue A and East 5th Street (this will only make sense if you read the tweets):

Motorcycle parking place.

It's a motorcycle parking place!

Oh, and a Pabst Blue Ribbon delivery truck.

Heineken? Pabst Blue Ribbon!

Great Job

I was walking down East 6th Street last night, when I saw up ahead of me a sign for the beloved Zen Yai.

Great Pho Shop job, I thought to myself:

Continuing on my way, I passed by the beloved Ace of Cuts:

Cup On Fence

This is a little something I like to call "Cup on Fence":

Thank you very much.

Thank you very much.

This post was brought to you by Tompkins Square Park, and by Avenue B, and by McDonald's Mobile Order & Pay, and by litter.

Caution, Parking

I was walking across St. Mark's Place this past Sunday, when I saw this woman gathering up the caution tape that had fallen into the pile of gravel there:

Gathering it up.

I didn't understand why she was doing it, but at the same time: I didn't care!

Later, walking back home the same way, I figured it out:

Parking spot.

Parking spots in the East Village are hard to find — you have to do a bit of improvising sometimes.

I'm still not sure what the caution tape had to do with anything though.

(No) Children Play Here

Tompkins Square Park is a popular place for people to put up their DIY signs, from Do Not Feed The Pigeons to Children Play Here:

Graffiti Boy

Back in February, I was walking across East 4th Street, just past First Avenue, when I saw this scene of a graffiti boy and his graffiti:

Graffiti boy.

He looked pretty young to be a graffitier, but this is the East Village after all!

He didn't hang around for very long though:

Graffiti boy gone.

At least he left us with his artwork, to remember him by!

I was walking across East 4th Street recently, past the Village View Apartments, when I saw these tracks in the dirt:

Wait a minute, what's that?!

A syringe.

It's a syringe!

East Village junkies have tracks too.

The beloved Odd, on East 5th Street, has the perfect name for a store in the East Village!

They were playing the disco music when I passed by this afternoon:

ODD also means Oppositional Defiant Disorder — another East Village trait!
